CrimTrac will establish a secondary data centre presence in TransACT under a ten-year, $14.9 million agreement signed this week.
The deal was negotiated through the Federal Government's 'Ready for Now' panel for data centre facilities.
A CrimTrac spokeswoman told iTnews that the deal was for a secondary facility. The Federal police information sharing agency signed up to host its primary facility within Canberra Data Centres (CDC) in May 2010.
Further comment is being sought on whether the TransACT facility will act solely as a back-up or whether some of the capacity is to be utilised, such as in an active-active configuration with the agency's primary data centre, which remains unchanged.
According to CrimTrac's latest annual report (pdf), the agency has an initial five-year lease on the CDC space, with five two-year extensions possible.
The spokeswoman confirmed to iTnews that these lease terms related to CDC and not TransACT.
CrimTrac CEO Doug Smith said in a statement that the TransACT agreement would "support CrimTrac's ongoing information management initiatives", though he provided no further details.
