Fujitsu Australia has been selected to take the lead in upgrading Australia’s fastest supercomputer.
The new supercomputer will be operated by National Computational Infrastructure (NCI) within The Australian National University campus in Canberra, and will be used by the likes of the CSIRO, Geosciences Australia and the Bureau of Meteorology for crucial research.
The new machine, named Gadi meaning ‘to search for’ in the Ngunnawal language of the traditional owners of the Canberra region, will increase compute speeds by ten times compared to its existing supercomputer also deployed by Fujitsu in 2012.
Fujitsu’s build will include its own technology paired with kit from other vendors such as Lenovo, Intel, NVIDIA, NetApp, Mellanox Technologies, DDN, Altair and APC by Schneider Electric.
Fujitsu will use its own technology plus Lenovo Neptune for direct liquid cooling, Fujitsu PRIMERGY CX2570 M5 servers, second-gen Intel Xeon Platinum processors, Intel Oprance DC persistent memory and NVIDIA V100 GPUs to accelerate deep learning training and inferencing.
It will utilise Fujitsu and Lenovo Nepturne direct liquid cooling techniques. Features Fujitsu PRIMERGY CX2570 M5 servers, also includes second-gen Intel Xeon Platinum processors, Intel Optance DC persistent memory and NVIDIA V100 GPUs to accelerate deep learning training and inferencing.
NetApp’s enterprise-class storage arrays will provide underlying storage sub-systems, clustered within a DDN Lustre parallel file system that can deliver terabyte scale data transfer speeds. Inter-connect networking will be provided by Mellanox’s HDR InfiniBand technology in a Dragonfly+ topology that can transfer data at 200 GB per second.

It will add even more brawn to the considerable brains already tapping into NCI.”
