Microsoft has made its first changes to GitHub since snapping up the open source code repository in June, offering more on its free tier while consolidating its enterprise offerings.
The company said in a brief blog post that GitHub Free now includes unlimited private repositories.
“For the first time, developers can use GitHub for their private projects with up to three collaborators per repository for free,” it said.
“Many developers want to use private repos to apply for a job, work on a side project, or try something out in private before releasing it publicly.
“Starting today, those scenarios, and many more, are possible on GitHub at no cost.”
Public repositories are also still free and include unlimited collaborators, the company said.
According to TheNextWeb, the move could make GitHub more competitive with rival Atlassian’s Bitbucket service, which already offers private repositories for free.
In addition, GitHub business cloud is being brought under GitHub Enterprise, making cloud and self-hosted repositories available at “one per-seat price”.
“With GitHub Connect, these products can be securely linked, providing a hybrid option so developers can work seamlessly across both environments,” the company said.
