Swinburne Uni equips managers with data skills

The course is currently being delivered through the university’s Australian Graduate School of Business Management.

The university expects between 35 and 50 students will partake in the new data analytics and visualisation unit this year.

It covers an introduction to “self-service analytics for businesses, critical evaluation of the role of tools and platforms in data analytics, business analytics reporting, data storytelling and data visualisation", the two said in a statement.

Course director Dr Paul Scifleet said it was about managers "being data literate" rather than forcing them to become data scientists.

“What we’ve been really focusing on is designing a degree that’s about the advanced knowledge and capabilities that management students will require to lead the kind of complex change digital change that’s significant at the moment," he said.

Scifleet told iTnews that students will be analysing datasets pertaining to business changes or social impacts, and will be tasked with presenting a pitch based on delivering business or organisational value from one of the datasets.

Tableau’s A/NZ country manager Nigel Mendonca said the vendor would conduct guest lectures and offer its feedback on projects.

“This is our first partnership here in Australia to co-create a formal course unit and we’re really excited about it... ideally we’d like to do more things like this," he said.
